As part of our efforts to advocate for the HSV community, Herpes Heroes has submitted comments to PACHA (Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS) to underline the importance of HSV treatments and prevention measures to help curb the spread of HIV as well.
This is important because HSV-2 increases the risk of HIV acquisition by up to threefold, as active herpes lesions create pathways for HIV transmission. Genital HSV is directly implicated in the acquisition of 30% of new HIV infections. Effective HSV management is not only vital for improving individual health outcomes but also plays a crucial role in curbing the spread of HIV.
We requested that the following be prioritized:
1. Advancing HSV Treatments: Supporting research into new antivirals and potential cures can improve the quality of life for those affected and reduce transmission risk.
2. Improving Testing Access: Routine HSV testing can empower individuals with knowledge, allowing them to take proactive steps in preventing both HSV and HIV transmission.
3. Raising Awareness: Public education campaigns can reduce stigma, encourage testing, and promote safer practices, fostering a community-level impact on HSV and HIV prevention.
